POP-UP FACTORY

At the Pop-Up Factory in the exhibit hall of Solid 2015, conference attendees could witness the real-time production of Alike bands.

The factory itself consisted of an assembly line for circuit board production (solder stenciling, pick and place machine, solder reflow, hand soldering, programming/test) as well as a wall of 12 Form 1+ 3D printers churning out algorithmically designed plastic enclosures. In the final assembly step, workers mated the unique 3D printed enclosures with an injection molded part, a neoprene wrist band, and the newly assembled circuit boards.

As with all good product production/shipping phases, a significant amount of design, manufacturing, and logistics work went into the preparation of this installation.  A postmortem discussion amongst the project leads on the keynote stage of Solid 2015 can be found in the gallery on this page.
